Treatments for wrinkle reduction

Facial wrinkles are a result of the skin’s natural aging process and individual predisposition but also of external influences (e.g. solar radiation)and lifestyle habits (e.g. smoking). The activity of the fine, small muscles in the face that we often use unconsciously—when frowning, for example—also contributes significantly to the formation of wrinkles.

Active ingredients used for wrinkle reduction

The active substance have been known for decades. Before it was used to smooth wrinkles in the1980s, its first clinical use was to treat overactive muscles (spasticity). The active ingredient is injected in very small portions into the muscles that contribute to wrinkles or cramps.

How does the active substance for wrinkle reduction work?

The active ingredient for wrinkle reduction blocks the signals between nerves and muscles that allow muscles to contract. For the treatment, it is injected into a specified muscle whose movement encourages wrinkles; this injection leads to relaxation of that muscle within a few days’ time. Depending on the client, fine wrinkles caused by the movement of the muscle usually disappear completely, while more pronounced wrinkles lose depth and are thus significantly reduced.

When is a wrinkle treatment useful?

If you are looking for a suitable method to relax your facial muscles and smooth wrinkles. Some areas of application are:

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Wrinkles around the mouth

It is also suitable for the treatment of:

  • Migraine
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

What is the procedure for wrinkle reduction?

Before the doctor injects the active substance, a detailed discussion about the expected effect and possible side effects takes place. Following this discussion, the treatment area is disinfected, and the drug is injected into the relevant muscles. The doctor uses extremely thin needles during the injection, so the treatment is not very painful. If necessary, an anaesthetic cream can be applied before treatment.

Treatment against excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

The therapy is considered one of the most effective treatments for excessive sweating. By inhibiting the release of acetylcholine from nerve cells, the active substance prevents the sweat glands from stimulating activity. The effect decreases after about six months.

Treatment against migraines

To treat chronic migraines, the doctor injects the active substance at various points in the head, neck and shoulder muscles. Muscular relaxation can relieve symptoms and reduce the frequency of migraine attacks or even prevent migraines altogether.

Are there conditions under which precautionary steps may need to be taken before a treatment for wrinkle reduction?

  • Intake of blood thinners within the last 7 to 14 days (including aspirin, etc.), as well as vitamin-E or gingko-containing medications, supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, and multivitamin supplements (due to risk of bruising)
  • Occurrence of fever blisters (due to danger of triggering a relapse in the treated area)
  • Medication with specific antibiotics (aminoglycosides)

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Nerve and muscle diseases

What should be considered after the treatment?

Please do not apply make-up around the injection area until the puncture sites no longer bleed.

On the day of the injection, you should not exercise or undergo any cosmetic facial treatment.

When is the effect visible?

In most cases, the effect of the treatment is visible after two to seven days, and the maximum effect is achieved after one to two weeks. In rare instances, it can take longer to become visible.

How long does the effect last?

The full muscle-weakening effect decreases after about three months. The duration of action after that period varies from four to seven months.

Risks and side effects

The injections can cause redness, swelling, drooping of the upper eyelid or eyebrow, and bruises (hematomas) at the puncture sites. Your doctor will inform you of possible risks before treatment.

Downtime

As a rule, no downtime is expected. You can perform your daily activities as usual.
